Living in Utah my whole life, I always thought people got pretty festive for Halloween! The spooky ghosts and goblins in the neighbors’ trees, the cackling witch on our friend’s porch, and the well-thought-through family Halloween costumes!
But then, I moved to Arizona. And let me tell you, the Halloween spirit is on a whole new level here! People argue that it is better than Christmas! They LOVE Halloween.
I think it’s so fun! They start celebrating in July. Right after the 4th, the shops set out all of their fall decor– pumpkins, costumes, and candy. Oh my!
It’s most likely because, for us Arizonians, Halloween is the time to finally celebrate our ability to go outside and not roast to death!
No matter where you live though, Halloween can be such a great way to bring your whole family together.
Just think of it, instead of everyone having their own set preference for a costume, this year, you do a family THEMED group costume!
And if you have a bigger family, you’ve come to the right place! We have some of the best group costumes that you will love.
Halloween Costume Ideas For Big Families
1. Super Mario
Mario? Luigi? UNITE! The original Mario Bros was released in 1983 and could only be found as an arcade game. It was just a simple black screen in the background!
Look how far we have come! With the new Super Mario Bros Wonder on the Nintendo 64, there is all kinds of magic happening on that screen.
No matter what era or generation you are from, everyone knows and loves Super Mario.
Let each family member choose their favorite characters and be sure to order your costumes in advance. It is such a cute costume, but this, my friends, is a popular pick!
So jump on it sooner rather than later! Thanks to Amazon, you’ll be ready by tomorrow.
2. Bandits
Caught red-handed! This is one of those fun ideas that also fits in the category of “great DIY Halloween costumes”.
Don’t have a black and white striped shirt? No problem!
Take a plain white shirt, and use black duct tape to create the lines.
Draw some money signs on garbage bags and all that’s left is to order the hats and masks!
Ready to rob the bank!
3. Inside Out
Did anyone else resonate with Inside Out #2 like I did? Love that movie!
This would be a great option if you are a family of 5.
Not enough characters from Inside Out? I have great news for you!
Inside Out 2 adds in Anxiety, Ennui, and Embarrassment. So you’re all set!
Does Grandma want to participate? Let her be Nostalgia!
4. Thriller
Everyone needs a little Michael Jackson in their life!
5. Retro 80’s
Throw back Thursday! Mom and dad are going to have fun with this one!
Who doesn’t love the 80’s?! The clothes, the hair, the color. It screams FUN!
Grab those leg warmers down from the attic and turn those tunes UP, UP, UP. It’s time to party!
6. Toy Story
My husband’s favorite Disney movie! I can almost guarantee this will be our family costume this year.
“You’ve got a friend in me”. Play that song on repeat as you walk down the street with your kiddos trick-or-treating and soak up the moments of family friendship.
7. The Grinch
Where are all my Christmas lovers out there?
Help people get in the spirit of Christmas by dressing as The Grinch with the whole gang!
8. The Office
“Identity theft is not a joke, Jim! Millions of families suffer every year.” — Dwight Schrute
In a weird way, Halloween is kind of like identity theft!
Get ready to have some good laughs from friends when you have your littles dressing up like characters from The Office!
9. The Princess And The Frog
If you have a large family, this one is perfect for you! There are so many characters to choose from!
Charlotte, her Dad “Big Daddy”, the frogs, Prince Naveen, Tiana, Dr. Facilier, Madame Odie, Raymond, Louis.
Don’t worry! Plenty of options to choose from! Have some fun with it!
10. Peter Pan
A timeless classic we have here on our hands!
Make sure you get Tink, Wendy, Captain Hook, and of course, Peter can’t be left out.
If you want to throw people off and keep them guessing, have Peter pan dress up as the shadow instead of the original green costume you would think of!
11. Harry Potter
Harry Potter fans, it’s your turn!
After dressing up like this as a family, you just might have to take your crew to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for Christmas break!
12. Zoo
This is an easy throw-together costume!
If you’re like my family and have collected so many animal ears, dress-ups, and claws, then you’re ready to go.
Have each family member pick their favorite animal. Make sure someone is the Zoo Keeper (or maybe it’s mom AND dad).
13. Football
We need a football player, we need a news broadcaster, we need an announcer, we need refs, we need cheerleaders.
And of course… we need a football!
Get ready to have some fun throwing your little one around the family as you walk around the neighborhood trick-or-treating together!
14. Minions
Try having your kids talk like the minions while in their costumes. They will love making up their own language.
Teach them a few Spanish words to throw in there too!
15. Fruit Ninja
This is one of those great options if you are looking for an easy idea that can be thrown together last minute.
If you don’t have time to preorder things, that’s ok! Give your kids some ninja masks and grab a cardboard box to make swords.
Then for the rest of the gang, use large pieces of cardboard to design the different fruits you want to be. And viola! Costume problem solved!
Well it’s time to hop to it! Halloween is right around the corner. Let’s see what perfect family Halloween costume you will use for your entire family! Happy Halloween!
